acne-mechanicaAcne Mechanica is a form of acne that can occur under repetitive friction between sports equipment or tight-fitting clothing against the skin. Exercise enthusiasts are most susceptible to this form of acne.

Some common sports equipments that can cause acne mechanica are:

  • helmets and helmet straps worn by football players.
  • shoulder pads worn by football players.
  • tight headbands worn by soccer players.
  • tight-fitting clothing made of synthetic fabric worn by sports enthusiasts.

Even occasional adhesive tape that remains on the skin for several days can cause acne mehanica. It will develop in any warm and moist area of your skin that is prone to repetitive friction.

How To Prevent Acne Mechanica?

A simple preventive measure such as changing your workout attire to cotton T-shirt can help to get rid of acne mechanica. Cotton is good in absorbing perspiration, reducing dampness and friction against the skin. Another effective way to prevent this type of acne is to take a bath immediately after exercise or other sports activities. Make sure to clean those areas of your body that are under straps during the activities.

If these preventive measures are not working, try applying a topical acne medication that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If this still doesn’t work, then you need to see your dermatologist for other prescription medications.
